BUDDHISM IN MONGOLIA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH<\/sup> CENTURY (BASED ON MATERIALS BY B. BARADIN)<\/strong><\/p>\n Sabrukova S. S.<\/p>\n This article investigates the features of Buddhism in early 20th-century Mongolia based on the field diary of Bazar Baradiin, a Buryat ethnographer and Buddhist pilgrim who traveled across the region in 1905\u20131906. The aim of the study is to analyze Baradiin\u2019s observations and identify the key characteristics of religious life in Mongolian society during that period. The research also assesses the scientific and cultural value of the diary as a historical and ethnographic source. The materials of the study include the unpublished manuscript of Baradiin\u2019s diary, created during an expedition organized by the Russian Committee for the Study of Central and East Asia. The methodology combines a systems approach, elements of cultural anthropology, and historical-documentary analysis. The results of the study reveal a multifaceted picture of Buddhism in Mongolia the pre-sence of major monastic institutions functioning as educational and administrative centers; variation in the discipline and moral standards of the clergy; active engagement of the religious elite with political power; and the preservation of Tibetan scholastic traditions in Mongolian Buddhist schools. Special attention is given to the role of Urga (modern Ulaanbaatar) as a religious and intellectual hub. The diary also documents the everyday practices of lay believers, as well as tensions between Buddhist ideals and the realities of social life.
