LAYMAN (JUSHI) IN THE CONTEXT OF HISTORICAL TRANSFORMATIONS OF CHINESE SOCIETY IN THE LATE 19TH \u2013 FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Khabdaeva A. K.<\/p>\n<p>This article examines the main trends in the development of Chinese Buddhism in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries in the context of socio-historical events. It analyzes the role of lay Buddhists, whose reformist activities resulted in the emergence of so-called \u201chumanistic Buddhism\u201d. The fundamental importance of education in the continuity of the Buddhist tradition is emphasized. The author believes that, in addition to historical processes, the humanistic principles of Chinese spiritual culture greatly influenced the development of Chinese Buddhism.
